The Happy New Year's Day Special this week: As the World's Party People are curing their Hangover from the New Year's Festivities the Team Members of Radio International will be presenting a special show on the first day and first show of 2025. Three Eurovision Spotlight XXL Specials looking at the 70s and 80s of the Eurovision Song Contest and Eurovision Lordship Marcus Keppel-Palmer dives deep into his memories and selected very special songs that not necessarily are Eurovision songs but certainly have a link to the Eurovision Song Contest. Those songs were also big hits at their time. Be surprised of what Marcus has selected for us.

The normal format of Radio International - The Ultimate Eurovision Experience will return next week with all the regular programme items.

1973 he had two songs in the running coming 4th and 11th: Ich bin ein glücklicher Mann und Au revoir, auf Wiedersehen.
1979 he came 4th with "Samba si! Arbeit no!"

Wencke, although being Norwegian represented Germany at the Eurovision Song Contest in 1968 with the song "Ein Hoch der Liebe" coming 6th.

1975
Dutch showmaster immensely popular on German TV in movies but most of all also as Quiz Show Master. Rudi Carrell represented the Netherlands at the Eurovision Song Contest 1960 with the song "Wat een geluk" coming 12th.

1977 (Number 1 in Italy and Switzerland, Number 4 in Germany, 3 in Austria)
The song was covered by Howard Carpendale, Dalida in 1977 and by Laura Branigan in 1984. Spanish singer Sergio Dalma (Bailar Pegados,1991, Number 4) covered the song in 2011.
Umberto Tozzi together with Raf represented Italy at the Eurovision Song Contest 1987 with the song "Gente di mare" coming 3rd.

Freddy is Ausstrian singer and actor born in 1931. Between 1956 and 1966 he had ten Number 1 Hits in the German Charts and sold around 60 Mio records and was at that time the most successful German-Speaking singer. For many decades he lives in Hamburg. He represented Germany in the very first Eurovision Song Contest in 1956 with the song "So geht das jede Nacht". There is no known ranking from the 1956 ESC.

English version is called "How can I go now".
A cover was released in 1995 entitled "He belongs to me" by Sing with Sebastian and Marianna Rosenberg. A French Cover version was released in 1976 "C’est lui que je veux" released in 1976 by Caroline Verdi and more Cover Version in German followed.
The song peaked at Number 7 in 1975 and became the 39th bestselling song of the year.
