The Eurovision Spotlight - The National Final Season:
With the beginning of a New Year is also the start of the National Final Season for the Eurovision Song Contest. Montenegro returns to the contest in 2025 and had already selected their entry in November 2024. 36 countries are taking part in the Eurovision Song Contest 2025 which will be taking place on 13 and 15 May 2024 for the two Semi Finals and the Grand Final on 17 May 2025. Radio International will be taking a look at the national finals and showcase the highlights every week in the Eurovision Spotlight as Javier Leal continues the series looking at the countries' selection shows of the past week.



 
Melodifestivalen 2025:  Sweden's national final is called Melodifestivalen and is the biggest one in the world of the Eurovision Song Contest. It is the 65th edition and is produced by Swedish broadcaster SVT. 30 entries out of 2794 submitted songs made it to the shows. The 30 entries will take part in the competition across five heats. Each heat consists of six songs, with the top two songs directly qualifying for the final. Unlike in the previous edition, only the third-placing song will proceed to a final qualification round at the end of the fifth heat, which will now feature five songs instead of ten. Two songs in the final qualification will then progress to the final, which will comprise of 12 songs. The winner of the final will be determined by the usual 50/50 combination of votes from the public and an international jury. All shows are hosted by Edvin Törnblom and Kristina Petrushina.The dates and locations of the shows is shown below:

Heat 1 on 01 Feb 2025 in Luleå
Heat 2 on 08 Feb 2025 in Gothenburg
Heat 3 on 15 Feb 2025 in Västerås
Heat 4 on 22 Feb 2025 in Malmö
Heat 5 on 01 Mar 2025 in Jönköping
Grand Final on 08 Mar 2025 in Stockhoplm's Strawberry (Friends) Arena

On 08 March 2025 is the date of the Grand Final of Melodifestivalen 2025. To gear the fan up Robert Wahlström will be joining JP in the studio this week to introduce the 12 Finalists in the Running Order.

Eurovision 2025 Song Preview - Germany: In view of the upcoming national final in Germany on 01 Mar 2025, Radio International will be introducing the competing songs on the show this week. Germany is part of the Big Five countries at the Eurovision Song Contest and with that directly qualified for the Grand Final of the Eurovision Song Contest  on 17 May 2025. Nine acts are battling it out for the ticket to Basel to represent Germany at the Eurovision Song Contest 2025. Let's get to know the songs on the show this week.

Melodifestivalen 2025 - Heat 4 in Malmö in Sweden (22 Feb 2025) - Complete Coverage

 


Melodifestivalen is Sweden's selection process to find that song that will represent Sweden at the Eurovision Song Contest. Out of 2794 submitted songs 30 entries are being distributed into 5 heats out of which two songs advance to the Grand Final of Melodifestivalen 2025 in the Strawberry (Friends) Arena on 08 May 2025 and out of each heat 1 song is selected to Final Qualification or second chance round. From that two songs join the ten winners from the heats to have a Grand Final of 12 songs the winner of which will be representing Sweden at the Eurovision Song Contest 2025 in Basel, Switzerland.

Radio International's JP is on location of Heat 4 in Malmö to report and interview the artists who are battling it out for a place in the Grand Final of Melodifestivalen 2025.

Eurovision 2016: Radio International Special Edition from Stockholm


A special 2-hour podcast edition of Eurovision Radio International, direct from the team in the Press Centre at the Eurovision Song Contest 2016 in Stockholm, featuring music from all the shows as well as some of the questions that we posed to the artists during their Press Conferences and ‘Meet and Greet’ sessions.

In Hour One:

Last year’s winning song ‘Heroes’ is performed by Måns Zelmerlöw, then we hear from the artists representing Armenia, Austria and Ireland. Lithuanian representative Donny Montell brings us #Blck, the title track from his new album as well as his 2016 Eurovision entry, and then we hear the songs from Azerbaijan, Hungary, Czech Republic, San Marino and Finland. Finally, Jamie-Lee from Germany sings the lead track from her new album ‘Berlin’ as well as her Eurovision song ‘Ghost’.

In Hour Two:

We have the first play on Radio International for Måns Zelmerlow’s new track ‘Fire in the Rain’, and then we hear from Frans, representing the host country Sweden, followed by Ukraine, Latvia, Spain, Israel, Iceland and Russia. After Italy and Slovenia, we have Amir from France with the title track  from his new album, ‘Au coeur de moi’, followed by his Eurovision entry, and the songs from the United Kingdom and Malta round off the show.

Eurovision 2016: Interview with Måns Zelmerlöw and Petra Mede (Hosts)


The 2016 edition of the Eurovision Song Contest takes place in Stockholm, Sweden with the participation of 42 countries that are competing on May 10 and 12 in the two Semi Finals and then the Grand Final itself on 14 May 2016. 

Co-hosting the show are Petra Mede (host in Malmö in 2013) alongside Sweden's 2015 Contest winner Måns Zelmerlöw. Listen to them tell us about working together as hosts of one of the most impressive Contest in the last years.
