The Eurovision Spotlight - The National Final Season:
The National Final Season for the Eurovision Song Contest is almost over this week with awaiting the release of the Eurovision entries from a couple of countries.  36 countries are taking part in the Eurovision Song Contest 2025 which will be taking place on 13 and 15 May 2024 for the two Semi Finals and the Grand Final on 17 May 2025. Radio International will be taking a look at the national finals and showcase the highlights every week in the Eurovision Spotlight as Alasdair Rendall continues the series looking at the countries' selection shows of the past week.



 
Melodifestivalen 2025 - The Grand Final:  "Sverige, vi har ett resultat"  On Saturday, 08 Mar 2025 the Grnd Final of  Melodifestivalen 2025 took place in the Strawberry Arena in Solna near Stockholm. At the end of the voting sequence Finnish trio KAJ were announced to be the winner of Melodifestivalen 2025 with the song "Bara Bada Bastu" and with this Sweden's representatives to the Eurovision Song Contest 2025.

Melodifestivalen is the biggest National Final selection process in the world of the Eurovision Song Contest. It is the 65th edition and is produced by Swedish broadcaster SVT. 30 entries out of 2794 submitted songs made it to the shows. The 30 entries will take part in the competition across five heats. Each heat consists of six songs, with the top two songs directly qualifying for the final. Unlike in the previous edition, only the third-placing song will proceed to a final qualification round at the end of the fifth heat, which will now feature five songs instead of ten. Two songs in the final qualification will then progress to the final, which will comprise of 12 songs. The winner of the final will be determined by the usual 50/50 combination of votes from the public and an international jury. All shows were hosted by Edvin Törnblom and Kristina "Keyoo" Petrushina.

During the rehearsal for the Grand Final of Melodifestivalen 2025, JP, Marc and Salman, the Radio International Interview Team was on location in the Strawberry Arena to conduct interview with more participating artists in the 2025 edition of Melodifestivalen. Cornelia Jakobs (Sweden 2022) winning Melodifestivalen

Melodifestivalen 2022 Interviews with John Lundvik, Robin Bengtsson, Faith Kekembo and Theoz: Sweden's Biggest and Best TV Show Melodifestivalen ended on Saturday 12 Mar 2022 with the Grand Final after funneling down the 28 entries via four heats, two semi finals and the Grand Final. Swedish broadcaster SVT received way over 2000 songs for the 2022 edition of Melodifestivalen which on Saturday was won by Cornelia Jakobs with the song "Hold me closer" and will be representing Sweden at the Eurovision Song Contest 2022 in Semi Final 2 Second Half. The Radio International Interview Team was in Stockholm, Sweden and interviewed all the contestants of Melodifestivalen plus more.

This week on Radio International hear the interviews with former Winners of Melodifestivalen and Swedish representatives at the Eurovision Song Contest.  In total, three former winners took part in the Grand Final of Melodifestivalen, Anna Bergendahl (2010), Robin Bengtsson (2017) and John Lundvik (2019). This week Radio International is delighted to broadcast the interviews with Robin Bengtsson who with "I can't go on" took part in the Eurovision Song Contest 2017 in Kyiv, Ukraine. Two years later John Lundvik and the Mamas represented Sweden at the Eurovision Song Contest 2019 with the song "Too late for love".  Both Swedish entries reached 5th place in Eurovision and both artists shared the stage of Meldifestivalen 2022. 
 
 

Radio International had the big pleasure to meet Robin and John for an interview on their 2022 participation in Melodifestivalen 2022. Robin Bengtsson's entry was written by Swedish Singer / Songwriter Victor Crone who represented Estonia at Eurovision 2019 with the song "The Storm". The song in the running for Robin is called "Innocent Love" and reached 11th place in the Grand Final of Melodifestivalen 2022.

JP also met John Lundvik on his participation in the current contest right after the first dress rehearsal of Melodifestivalen 2022. This time John took a Swedish song into the running called "Änglavakt" that came 8th. The English version of the song is called "Lights go low".

Also Radio International had the pleasure to meet and interview Faith Kekembo during the rehearsal week of Melodiestivalen 2022 who performed the song "Freedom" coming 10th. In the interview she'll be telling us all about her musical career but also her other career. Listen to the interviews on the show this week.


Theoz and Cazzi Opeia (Melodifestivalen 2022)

Further the Interview Team of Radio International had the pleasure to interview Cazzi Opeia and Theoz together inthe Press Hall of Melodifestivalen 2022. Enjoy this funny interview with some of Sweden's finest singes. Theoz performed "Som du vill" which came 7th in the Grand Final of Melodfiestivalen 2022 and Cazzi Opeia reached Number 9 with the song "I can't get enough".

Sweden's Melodifestivalen 2022 Assessment: Last week Melodifestivalen expert Robert Wahlstroem from Gothenburg in Sweden joined JP to introduce the songs competing in the Grand Final of Melodifestivalen 2022. Robert will be joining JP again for the second part to assess the 2022 edition of Melodifestivalen.

Week 11/2018 - Eurovision Radio International - 14 Mar 2018: Melodifestivalen 2018 Recap, Eurovision 2018 - PODCAST AVAILABLE NOW


 
This weekend saw the final national finals in Sweden, Norway and Lithuania plus the announcement of Russia's Eurovision enty.  With this week the 43 entries for the Eurovision Song Contest 2018 to take place in Lisbon, Portugal May 08, 10 and 12 are selected and the National Final Season 2018 is over. Radio International's JP was in Stockholm, Sweden interviewing all the artists taking part at Sweden's Melodifestivalen 2018. A special thanks for the great collaboration with Marc and Salman from Germany's Prinzblog. So this week's edition of Radio International will recap Melodifestivalen 2018 in our first part and JP brought back some interviews with the particpating artists. Also David Mann was at the national final of San Marino and submitted some interviews with Jessika who will be representing San Marino at Eurovision 2018. Then Dermott Manning will be taking a look at six Eurovision 2018 entries which were selected recently. So what are you waiting for. Melodifestivalen 2018: Interview with John Lundvik

John Lundvik (Melodifestialen 2018) "My Turn" with JP
Melodifestivalen is Sweden's national televised music competition to find the best new song of the year. The winner of the competition then goes on to represent Sweden at the Eurovision Song Contest. Twenty-eight acts go through four Semi Finals and a Second Chance round before the top twelve go into the Grand Final of Melodifestivalen 2018, held once again at the Friends Arena in Solna (near Stockholm) in front of a live audience of almost 30000 spectators, plus millions of TV viewers both in Sweden and abroad.

Since 2009, Radio International has been present each year at the Melodifestivalen Grand Final rehearsals and interviews the artists, the producer and the hosts.

In this clip, we talk to John Lundvik, starting fourth in Melodifestivalen 2018 with the song "My Turn". Normally John is a song writer but this year wanted to try out to be a singer in the competition as well. Also there is a connection the Swedish Royal Family.
